Tryout Tips for Coaches PDF Print E-mail

 

  • Read your guidelines/bylaws thoroughly.
  • Always keep your principal in the know.
  • Leave nothing to assumption.
  • Parent Packet-hold a mandatory parent meeting prior to try-outs. Packet should include:
  • Requirements for eligibility. Grades/skills
  • Inherit risk of cheerleading
  • Mandatory attendance dates
  • Tryout process ex. Draw numbers, perform chant, cheer, and group
  • Scoring system- ex. 20% teacher recommendation, 80% judges, judges selection final
  • Announcement process-posted on gym door 1 hour after tryouts or receive a call at a certain time or will be notified by email, etc.
  • Cheer fees-what it covers & due dates
  • Mandatory fitting dates
  • Summer camp dates
  • Choose certified judges.
  • Full communication with judges before tryouts.
  • Have checks ready for judges.
  • Judges do not leave until scores are completely tallied.
  • Do not post scores until judges have left the property.



Linda Lundy has over 30 years experience in cheerleading. She’s certified to judge for Cheer LTD, American Cheer Power, United Cheer, UCA and a USASF Legality Judge. She is also a dance judge (Level IV) with the Dance and Drill Team Directors of America. She’s a USAG gymnastics judge and a Red Cross Instructor in CPR, first aid and sports safety. Linda is founder of “National Cheerleading Week” and “National Cheer Coach’s Day” and currently owns Cheer Integrity, which is known for judges training and placement.
