Have written, well organized plans
    • Coaches should attend ALL practices, related events
    • Practices begin on time--everyone ready to practice
    • Quality of practice time is important, not quantity.
    • Recognize squad’s capabilities and match the difficulty
    • Schedule what to improve each practice
    • Written plans allow for safe practices—good for documentation purposes

Schedule for practice
    • Warm-up
       1. State goals for practice
       2. Vary who conducts warm-up
       3. Aerobic conditioning and stretching
       4. Set routine avoids wasted time

    • Jumps
       1. 10 – 15 minutes
       2. Work all jumps for best use of time
       3. Work both legs in jumps

    • Tumbling (15 minutes)
       1. Prepare for game/competition
       2. Beginning of year—new skills
       3.  Later in year this becomes timing and perfection time

    • Break (5 minutes)
       1. Water breaks important
       2. Bathroom breaks

    • Partner stunts and pyramids (30 minutes)
       1. Safety and spotting techniques taught and/or reviewed
       2. Work on specific progression (simple to complex)
       3. Material appropriate for ability level
       4. Stunts and pyramids checked off when mastered

    • Cheer/Chant (30 minutes)
       1. Beginning of year—learning material
       2. Later in year—review and updating
       3. Incorporation of tumbling, jumps, stunts

    • Cool down
       1. Stretch
       2. Remind squad of upcoming events, dates

Basic practice procedures
    • Provide constant supervision
    • Consistently enforce all rules
    • Allow no jewelry or loose clothing
    • Actively control situations and stop unsafe activities
    • Prohibit talking or horseplay while actively practicing
    • Make sure practice and performance areas are safe
    • Follow proper progressions. Inform squads of inherent risks and how to avoid them
    • Understand current emergency plan
    • Keep a positive and enthusiastic attitude
       1. Give positive critiques
       2. Organize for disciplined practices.
    • Be creative
       1. Incorporate new chants, cheers, stunts
       2. Keep material that crowd enjoys, add variety and new ideas:  jumps, stunts, and tumbling
       3. Add team building activities
       4. Review pep rally ideas
       5. Learn new dances
       6. Work on individual routines
       7. Rainy day activities
       8. Relays, races
