TUMBLING - trampoline to floor

Question

Hi Coach Wayne!
You probably don't know me but you came to our gym for summer camp...You're awesome! I cheer for the Vipers..Well, I was wondering..If you get your flipflop on the trampoline, does that mean you can get it on the floor too? thanks...email me back when you get a chance!

Answer

The trampoline is a great tool for learning the handspring... but just because you can perform a handspring on the trampoline does NOT mean you've also learned it on the floor. But it's a big step in the right direction....

Here's the difference.
The handspring on tramp is SLOWER than on floor.
You'll have to learn to push HARDER with your legs to move the skill from trampoline to the mats.
You do NOT have to be very strong to do one on TRAMP....especially your LEG push... it will have to be MUCH more aggressive on the floor.
The trampoline is much more FORGIVING than the floor...for example... on the floor... if you make a mistake (toss your head, undercut, forget to leg-push, fail to pass through a proper handstand position... leave your head out... set your arms too wide... fail to bring your feet together, etc.) the skill will LOOK bad and FEEL bad.. and can potentially be DANGEROUS. The SPRINGINESS of the trampoline will help prevent injury... make it SEEM like you're getting the skill... and allow you to make it over in a reasonable form.

SO... yes it helps you get the feel of the skill... and gradually acclimate yourself to the sequencing of movements with a minimum risk, but... NO, it doesn't guarantee an instant transition to floor.

Have fun, Be safe PUSH hard!!!
