COACHING RESOURCES
Team Unity

  • Getting to Know You- Have the squad sit in a circle. The first person says her name and one thing that she is good at (it doesn't have to be cheerleading related). For example, "My name is Ms. Pineapple and I'm good at painting nails." Then the person on her right repeats what Ms. Pineapple said along with her own name and what she is good at. Go around the circle with each person repeating what everyone before her said.

  • M&M Game- Cheerleaders sit in a circle. Pass around a bag of M&Ms. Tell them to take as many M&Ms they want but they can't eat them. For every red (any color) M&M they took, they have to share something about (positive) themselves. They can eat the candy when their done.

  • Bio Cards- Each team member writes three facts on a card that describe herself. The coach collects the cards and reads them aloud. The rest of the squad tries to guess who is being described.

  • Sculpting- Give your squad different supplies such as newspaper, scissors, construction paper, glitter, straws, tape, string, etc. and tell them to create a sculpture that represents their school's spirit. Have them explain the significance. If the school's spirit is low, use this opportunity to discuss how they can improve their school's spirit.

  • Car Wash- Line up in two lines facing each other. Send one cheerleader at a time down the center of the lines. Everyone touches her and says something encouraging or words of praise to her. All this attention produces a sparkly, shiny, happy "car" at the end of the wash. Make sure that each squad member goes through the wash.

  • Trust Fall- Cheerleaders sit in a close circle with their legs straight and arms out. One cheerleader stands in the center of the circle. She should have everyone's feet around her ankles. The girl in the center squeezes all her muscles and is very tight. She falls to the side and the other cheerleaders catch her and push her back and forth in the circle. Let all members be the one in the center.

  • Back To Back- Squad members pair up and sit back to back, interlocking their arms. Try to stand up. Then try with the whole squad.

  • Relay Lock Race- Each person selects a partner. They stand back to back and lock arms by the elbows while holding their own stomach with their hands. The coach gives the instruction to get from one side of the gym to the other. Don't give them specific instructions on how to get to the finish line other than they can't let go of there stomaches. This causes creativity and laughter.

  • Create A Monster- Make a monster that walks with both hands and feet on the ground. The monster must have one less arm than the number on the squad and one more foot. Once the monster is created, it has to move five feet and make a sound.

  • To Be Or Knot To Be- Everyone stands in a circle and puts in their right hand. With their left hand they grab the right hand that is in front of them. No one can hold both hands of one person. The squad then works together to untangle the knot without letting go of hands.

  • Paper Bag Pickup- Get a paper grocery bag. Each member of the squad must pick up the bag with her teeth, while being held completely off the ground by the other members of the team. Start with the biggest team member. After each cheerleader picks up the bag, cut off about 1 inch off the top of the bag, so that by the time they get to the smallest team member, they will have to hold her practically upside-down for her to reach the bag.

  • Sit On My Lap- Everyone stands in a circle facing the back of the person in front of them. Each person grabs the shoulder's of the person in front of them. Everyone must then try to sit on the lap of the person behind them while staying in a circle.

  • Encouragement- Have a piece of paper for every team member on the squad with one name on each page. The team sits in a cicle. Everyone has 30 seconds to write one positive thing on each team member's sheet (30 seconds per sheet, then pass them). At the end, each girl goes home with a sheet with many encouraging statements. A variation of this game is to have each team member have her own paper taped to her back.

  • Toxic River- Everyone is on one side. You measure a space about 5 feet and call it a toxic river. You want the whole squad to cross as fast as they can. They aren't allowed to cross the toxic river without and secial pair of boots and there is only one pair of boots. Each person can use the boots only once. The boots cannot be tossed over the river. Each person has to personally give the boots to he next person and if they touch the toxic waste without the boots, the team must start over. Hint: Carrying people over is the key.

  • The Yarn Web-The squad stands in a large circle with one girl holding a ball of yarn. The first girl holds on to one end of the yarn and chooses another to throw the yarn to. She must tell her one thing that she likes about her (ie. personality, the way she did something). The second girl then picks another person to do the same. Continue this until the ball of yarn runs out. This will create a web to hang on your teams bulletin board.

  • Human Letters-Divide the squad into groups of 4 to 5 people. The coach call out a letter. Each group has to spell out the letter on the ground with their bodies. The group to get the letter the fastest, or the most accurate, wins. Keep score.

  • Big/Lil Sis- Put all of the JV members names in a hat. Have the Varsity team members pull out a name. This is their lil sis for the year. Do the opposite for the JV members to get their big sis. Throughout the year have the team members send notes and special (inexpensive) gifts to one another. At the end of the year have everyone say who their sis was.
